The creation of a risk assessment can be challenging at times, especially for unexperienced authors. As with every document, writing a risk assessment can be separated into form and content.
Fortunately, international safety standards define the process and the various steps to be taken along the process. ISO12100 and ANSI B11 are two good examples out of general machine safety.
In the amusement industry ASTM F24 is currently developing a new standard dedicated to the topic of risk assessment. Here is a figure showing the individual steps:
ADVANTIS has incorporated this process including the steps shown. Our so-called “Base Module” covers the items described under section prerequisites in the standard.
Every case in ADVANTIS starts with hazard identification and is then followed by an initial risk estimation and risk evaluation, the same as called for in the standard.
The definition of risk reduction measures then mirrors the requirements defined in the standard.
The results are then documented in the risk assessment report, as requested by the standard in a dedicated section.
Back to form and content; with a clear definition of the form, an author can actually focus on the content of the risk assessment.
This helps risk assessments to be more consistent effective and subsequently makes our industry a safer place.
